Czech Republic, 1968
Richard Stipl studied at the Ontario College of Art in Toronto with an Honours Diploma in 1992 and received the prestigious Governor General's Award the same year. Initially working as a painter, Stipl has turned to sculpture. Using himself as a model, he focuses extensively on the undefined nature and paradoxes of time inherent in the act of continually recreating oneself throughout life.
Stipl's paintings and sculptural works force us to reconsider the limits and contemporary attitudes and approaches to the creation and consumption of art. Considered an exceptional talent in technical terms, Richard distinguishes himself from his contemporaries by his uncanny ability to incorporate a stimulating "life force" into his artworks, regardless of the media and materials he uses.
Stipl has exhibited in Toronto, Montreal, New York, Miami, Berlin, Los Angeles, Madrid, Stuttgart and the Czech Republic, and is included in many important public and private collections around the world.
