Pedro Varela dreams of the landscape as an organic, fluid mosaic, exuberant in flowers and exotic fruits. Focusing on a melting pot of heterogeneous references, the collective memory links wild, strange and seductive nature with strange, adventurous or extravagant characters, often of a relaxed moral character. Amidst the sensory whirlwind that the tropics offer, excess is the norm. An overflowing and abundant release. The artist feeds on this vast iconographic universe linked to his reality. Unlike his canvases, there are works on paper made using two basic opposing procedures: cutting out the contours of the drawing to disengage it from its support or perforating through the surface to create the line, through the hollow space. Thus, by exploring the rhythmic power of intervals, Pedro Varela offers an almost tactile quality to the eye.
Varela studied printmaking at Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He has had solo exhibitions in places such as Anima Gallery, Doha, Qatar; Centre Culturel Jean-Cocteau, Les Lilas, France; Xippas Galerie Montevideo, Uruguay; Product 81 Gallery, Miami, USA; and Galeria Enrique Guerrero in Mexico. And he has exhibited collectively on more than 90 occasions in Portugal, Brazil, Spain, USA, Sweden, Mexico, London, France, among others. His work is part of important international collections such as the Museo de Arte do Rio, the Coleção Gilberto Chateubriand, Montblanc, Mexico; SESC Brazil, among others.
